Jessica Karas Bay, Postpartum Doula based in Adelaide

A Woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.
– Diane Mariechild
Hi I’m Jessica, a Mama of 2, Luna & Mateo, Wife and Adelaide based Postpartum Doula.
Birth truly is a sacred rite of passage, the ending of a life once known and the beginning of a completely new one. It is filled with a kaleidoscope of experiences, emotions, thought processes and hundreds of new tasks. Every woman deserves the right to heal, recover and slowly bloom during the first 40 days. It is said that what happens during this time, carves the way for the next 40 years. This is a time that really needs to be honoured as she regains her strength and identity to step back out into the world and walk into the present as a Mama.
My purpose as a postpartum Doula is to nourish Mamas (and Papas) with emotional, physical, spiritual, practical support and guidance during the intimate 4th trimester. As a new or seasoned Mama, each pregnancy, birth, and postpartum phase can vary, and each time requires different elements and resources. Sometimes we are so in tune to our needs and how to source them and others we can feel so far out of our depths that we need some extra guidance. And of course, there is a world of clarity and uncertainty in between.
After my birth with Luna, my first born, I was in a state of complete shock. Not only from our hospital birthing experience, but from postpartum and newborn life. I just had no idea of what to expect or what it would be like. I was naive about it all and started motherhood being completely overwhelmed and depleted I was in Berlin, Germany in a country and language that was not my own and in a system that was challenging to navigate without the support of my family.
No one told me how to prepare, on both a practical and emotional level and I also had no idea that I needed to prepare. I thought the recovery was something that happened without the need to prepare or try! It took me years to just be ok, but with the help of professionals, friends, family, and time, I was able to fully recover.
The second time around my experience was the complete opposite. I had a calm and deeply supported physiological home birth with Mateo and the most beautiful postpartum experience. Now I fully understand what it means to be in the baby bubble with milk and oxytocin flowing.
After honouring my 40 days and taking it slow, I came out of it feeling physically, mentally, and emotionally balanced. I was able to navigate being a Mama of two with more joy and ease.
It would be an honour to be a part of your village and to be there with you as you slowly bloom. After all, we all share the same name; Our name is Mama.
